Oh,
the impossible task of computing the thousands of images that my
eyes take in every day. ‘I must draw that’, ‘Oh
that would make a great painting’, ‘I’ve got to
put those colours together on canvas.’ I’m like a magpie
collecting ideas. I have to find ways to store, use and develop
all this information. It is frustrating to have an idea but be unable
to translate the image to canvas and get the result I want. Having
my first solo exhibition at HMS has brought to my attention just
how many of these ideas I have begun to explore, but all at the
same time. I hope by a more focused approach of one or two subject
matters at a time I will be able to overcome this.
My recent work seems to be taking two main directions; Abstract
and Figurative. I am enjoying playing about with abstract ideas
to develop my use of colour and composition. In my figurative work
I am again exploring composition through the positioning of the
figure on the canvas and how the figure relates to its surroundings.
My main focus here will be to build in confidence when depicting
hands, feet and the human head.
The common denominator in my work at the moment is my newly found
love of working in oil paints.
So, I intend to draw and paint as often as I can to be more able
to translate the world around me into paint marks on canvas that
I believe in.
