David Manley opens a solo exhibition of new paintings
at the Tarpey Gallery in Castle Donington on 16th July, 2011.
Entitled ‘From The Earth Wealth’ the 45 pictures
comprise a personal journey through North West Leicestershire
where the artist lives and the gallery is located. “Each
painting represents a town or village in the district, and the
series as a whole is my very personal visual take on the spirit
of the place”.
David has been a local resident for over 20 years
but never previously made pictures inspired by his immediate
surroundings. He says that “All of my art is made up of
individual series of paintings and photographs, usually of far
flung places I have visited, but on this occasion I felt it
was time to look at my own environment and I discovered much
that I had previously ignored or was simply unaware of”.
The artist took early retirement through ill health
from his role as Dean of Arts, Design & Technology at the
University of Derby in 2009 and, alongside studies for a Masters
degree in Photography at De Montfort University, Leicester (awarded
in July 2010), has concentrated much of his activity on visiting
all forty five hamlets, villages and towns in the district.
Director of the Gallery, Luke Tarpey, comments
“that these pictures will certainly provoke comment on
the area in which the artist and the gallery are located and
they show an idiosyncratic, unique perspective on the area.
David took the title of the show from the Latin motto of the
district that emphasises its mineral and agricultural riches”.
The exhibition that also features a selection
of the artist’s source photographs runs until 20th August.
