| Emerging
Echoes
‘An
apparently simple surface can suddenly reveal itself as infinitely
deep and complex. Penetrate still further and it once again becomes
simple; for beyond the level of tidy reason, secrets, myths and
fables belong to us all.’
Joseph Beuys
This
installation is part of a narrative that explores, unfolds, arranges
and illuminates fragments and echoes of identity and creates new
structures and languages from the dialogue between the old with
the new. Informed by art historical contexts and the history surrounding
the studios at Harrington Mill, these small interventions and ephemeral
compositions are the essential elements, each being autonomous,
but also part of the structure as a whole.
The
re-appropriation of discarded ephemera forms the basis of the constructions,
each being carefully selected and considered but intuitively assembled
and placed. The muted tones and imperfections of time are essential
to the individual character and delicacy of the work. The emergence
of a fragile, rhythm serves to inform the overall structure as well
as the surrounding space.
The
audience is invited to consider the intimacy of scale, the relationship
between individual pieces, the subtle tones of light and shade,
individual placements high and low, as well as the overall synergy
within the space.
