STANDING ROOM
OCTOBER FESTIVAL CURATOR IN RESIDENCE OPPORTUNITY
INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

Harrington Mill Studios is offering an East Midlands based curator the chance to work in a project space during a one month long residency taking place from 1st - 31st October 2007. The residency will allow for a project led by the curator to be showcased in an exhibition or happening at an open studios event, as part of October Festival organised by NCAN (Nottingham Contemporary Art Network).

Harrington Mill Studios welcomes proposals for projects involving some form of collaboration, bringing together more than one arts practitioner or participant under any theme and working process. We are interested in and open to the various ways in which a curator will interpret and explore this stipulation.

HARRINGTON MILL STUDIOS

Harrington Mill Studios provides workspaces for professional fine artists committed to making challenging and high quality work. Founded in February 2007, its mission is to develop as a centre of excellence for contemporary artists and curators. Harrington Mill Studios is sponsored by Erewash Borough Council and The University of Derby.

WHERE
Harrington Mill Studios is on the first floor of a renovated Victorian Lace Mill overlooking the canal in the conservation area of Long Eaton. The studios are a short train ride from Nottingham, Derby and Leicester city centres.

FACILITIES
24 hour opening; heating; kitchen; WC; electricity; broadband with wireless internet access; parking.

ACCESS
The studios are on the first floor and accessed by a stone winding staircase. If you have any queries regarding access please contact us (details below).

VIEWING
Please contact us if you would like to book an appointment to view the space.

THE SPACE
The October Festival curator residency will contribute to the development of the project space as a hub of curatorial experimentation and collaborative practices, exploring relationships between the practices of curators, artists and audiences. Projects undertaken will be documented and archived, in consultation with resident curators and artists, in order to create a dynamic resource centre.

OCTOBER FESTIVAL
Organised by NCAN, OctoberFest is a contemporary art festival taking place at venues across Nottingham with the participation of independent artists and studio groups. Harrington Mill Studios will take part in this festival with an open studios event on the weekend of 27th -28th October; the curator residency will be a major feature of this event. This is a great opportunity to forge relationships with other arts practitioners in the region.

WHAT HARRINGTON MILL STUDIOS WILL PROVIDE
Harrington Mill Studios will provide a rent free space of 200 square feet and an opportunity for an exhibition at the studios. We are unable to provide funds for any additional costs of running the project, accommodation or transport.

During the residency the curator will receive support from volunteer staff, publicity provided as part of October Festival and a feature on our website.

Further terms and conditions of the residency will be subject to contract.

WHO CAN APPLY?
Harrington Mill Studios will accept proposals from anyone based in, or originating from, the East Midlands whose practice involves work as a curator, co-ordinator, arts project manager or artist. Proposals are welcomed from practitioners at any stage of their career.

We invite proposals for any project and encourage those that demonstrate commitment to critical and creative enquiry and experimentation.

DEADLINE
All applications and images must be received by Harrington Mill Studios no later than 6pm on Friday 31st August 2007.

Applicants may be asked to attend an informal interview at a mutually agreed date.
